I collected many guns over the years and back in the late 90's when I first spotted the Makarov MP-654K Co2 gun I purchased one brand new for around £60 which was a true 'T99.' Serial number (1st generation). I did shoot the gun a few times but mainly it was cherished with only the occasional use and regular cleaning to keep it in the best condition possible. I ended up selling my T99 version in early 2014 for £165 so not a bad investment really. The earlier guns were said to use parts from the real 9mm firearm Makarov pistol they replicated but how much of that was true I never knew. They were made in the same factory as the real guns so it's definitely possible although parts probably weren't heat treated properly, if at all for the Co2 versions as there'd be no need.
The Gen 1 Makarovs like my old one had better fitting slides, stronger 'recoil' springs, better blueing, flatter front muzzles (like the real gun), wider glare strips and had other differences which made them generally better imho. For example; Generation 1 on the left & generation 3 (I think) on the right in the pictures below.
